What is Adventure?
  • For a child it may be their first solo visit to the corner shop 50 metres away.
  • For a young teenager it may be a week away from their family.
  • For an adult it may be starting a new relationship, or a new business.
  • For some it is exploring their often unknown inner world – their thoughts, history, attitudes, roots or beliefs.
What is it for you?

In a world where it is difficult to find a physical activity that has never been done before (solo swimming of the Atlantic is still unaccomplished) many people seek experiences that will take them into unknown territory, not perhaps physically but emotionally and spiritually.

Google the word ‘adventure’ and you’ll get 887 million entries.

Wikipedia defines it as “an exciting or unusual experience; it may also be a bold, usually risky undertaking, with an uncertain outcome … The term also broadly refers to any enterprise that is potentially fraught with physical, financial or psychological risk, such as a business venture, a love affair, or other major life undertakings.”

The Old English roots of the word advent are the Latin adventus ‘arrival,’ and advenire, from ad- ‘to’ + venire ‘come.’

A sense of the level of risk is personal.

Some people are afraid of spiders. Others are afraid of taking out a business loan. Adventure means invading that unknown and finding out for yourself what is there.

Pushing the boat out.

In Powerchange we have helped many people launch themselves towards adventuring in new and unknown inner and outer ‘worlds’:

Martin Hewitt, our Partner based in Warwick leads young people to places like Mongolia, Peru, and Africa.

Tim Abel, our Partner in South Wales has a history of adventure too, in South America and Asia.

Gillian Curtis our partner in Islington has worked with charities in out-of-the-way parts of Africa with her husband David.

Pete working for a charity in the Andes, Richard pioneering a new school system in Jordan.

Many of our coaches and clients are adventurers, going beyond the normal, beyond their comfort zones (often way beyond!) testing their limits, discovering inner strength, renewing their relationship with risk.

What will you do?
